How Many cans to order to screen for radon in your home: Our laboratory recommends that you use one can for every 500 square feet of heated space. However, many people feel that this is "overkill" and that it is not necessary to use this many canisters, at least not for an initial screening. Most of our tests call for one canister up to about 1400 square feet, two canisters up to about 3000 square feet to 3500 square feet, and additional canisters thereafter for very large homes based on size. In addition, since radon is about six times heavier than air, most screenings are done only on the ground floor, or lowest level of heated, normal living space. Therefore some people opt, for example, to use only one canister in a 2000 square foot 2 story home.
